Worldwide listing of responsible whale watching bases

Swim with dolphins and whales on Réunion Island (Saint-Gilles)

TAKE A RESPONSIBLE APPROACH TO MEETING CETACEANS

Photograph by Pierre Lavagne de Castellan, head of the Shelltone Whale Project

A word from Pierre

Our base on Reunion Island is special, as it's the only base where we can launch with cetaceans.

My inter-species communication work with humpback whales has been practised for decades in the water, in contact with the animals, so I'm very sensitive to the way it has to be done. Only a great knowledge of cetaceans and their emotions, coupled with the utmost respect for their privacy, can make this activity possible. I have complete confidence in Greg's team to guarantee good practice.

The Shelltone Whale Project cetacean-watching charter is fully respected.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

We consider ourselves to be naturalist guides. Greg and I are passionate about the ocean, which we worship. It's our nurturing 'sea', our cradle. We believe that launching boats into the water is a tremendous asset and a unique way of raising awareness. An underwater encounter with a dolphin or a whale creates a positive shock, an emotion so strong that it remains engraved in our memories forever. It's a great way of raising awareness and realising just how precious this fragile natural world really is. Thanks to these moments of play, love and complicity, new protectors of the oceans are gradually emerging.
